I’ve got two tattoos - both on my right side.
I got the swallow on my hip during a really difficult time with my family. Traditionally, when sailors were returning from the sea knew that when they saw a swallow bird on their boat, they were almost home. They would tattoo a swallow on their heart because they believed that if they drowned, a swallow would carry their soul home.
I got the swallow during a time when I was in needing to find my way home.
I got the birdcage right after we moved to San francisco - To me, a birdcage with an open door represented escaping the comfort of the world I’d always known (North Carolina) for a brand new adventure- and the yellow rose winding through the cage represented our first home in the new city. Our first building had a big yellow rose bush in front.
Brent and I both plan to get a dove tattoo soon in honor of our baby daughter.
